HistoryTowards the end of the 19th century, Södertälje was a popular health resort, located by the channel that connects Lake Mälaren with the Baltic. This is where the country's gentry came each summer to enjoy the beautiful countryside and imbibe the health-enhancing spring water. The local council sought to further increase the attractiveness of the town and resolved to build a fine hotel with rooms suited to the upper class bathers visiting Södertälje. Between 1887 and 1888, a hotel was constructed on a large, centrally-located plot, with a view of the Saltsjöviken inlet. The architect was Ernst Haeggelund and the hotel was named Nya Strandhotellet (the New Shore Hotel). The owners, the Town of Södertälje, leased the business to restaurateur C G Spannert. During the 20th century, from the 1930s onwards, the hotel was run as a family company. Quality Hotel Park is centrally situated in Södertälje, directly adjacent to the town's main shopping streets. Today, the town is known for the large corporations based here, AstraZeneca, Scania and Svenska Volkswagen, and for its many sports activities and ethnic diversity. The town offers a diverse cultural scene, including a municipal art gallery and an annual culture night. Some of Sweden's best fishing is to be found here and parts of the lovely Sörmlandsleden hiking path pass through the municipality. Located centrally in the town are the popular tourist destinations, such as the Tom Tits Experiment science centre, the Sydpoolen adventure baths and spa, and the Torekällberget outdoor museum.
In recent years, the hotel market in Södertälje has been favourable, thanks to the town's well-developed business community. In addition, the town benefits from the dynamics of southern Greater Stockholm, which features, among other things, the Stockholm International Fairs centre.
